Abstract

The history of medicine is often divided into a "before" and an "after" certain milestones that challenged established dogma. One of the most profound occurred at Johns Hopkins University in 1944, led by Dr. Alfred Blalock. His life represents not only the advancement of surgical technique, but the transformation of the surgeon from a mere technician into a research scientist.
